The weather is finally warming up!

While the snow’s been gone for a bit now, today we got our first warm day. The sports teams that practice outside should be happy about this. I know that some athletic teams had difficulty practicing when it was constantly threatening snow. Even more than that, though, it’s just more pleasant to practice outside when the sun is both visible and warm. Also the mud couldn’t have help. Just be glad that spring is coming for athletes and nonathletes alike.

Sports news for week three of the semester…

In tomorrow’s paper we are honoring a select few OU athletes for their hard work and dedication. Amanda Just and Elizabeth Wilkens earned NAIA All-American honorable mention honors and were both named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) All-Southwest Region Team. These girls have really shown what it is like to play like a Champion of Character for the NAIA college division. Congratulations to both girls!

In Braves and Lady Braves basketball we are coming down to only four scheduled home games and the most recent one happens to be this Thursday, January 28th. The games start with the girls at 6:00 p.m. and the boys following at 8:00 p.m. Try to be there to cheer on the Braves and Lady Braves as the take on the McPherson Bulldogs.

Now lets talk about one more thing that has been on my mind for a while. Tiger Woods is in rehab my fellow peers for cheating on his wife with like 26 women. It is incredible that in recent new Elin (Tiger Woods’ wife) wants to try to get back with him. She was spotted spending a few nights there with him and possibly going to his classes with him. I respect Tiger Woods for only one thing… he is an amazing golfer.

I just want to say congratulations to all of the football players as well as the girls soccer team. It is pretty incredible to be a student at a school where the two teams go to the national tournament during the same season. I am very glad that I am able to say that. I know how hard it is playing on an undefeated team. I know the training and dedication it takes because I was part of a baseball team this past summer that finished their season 46-0 and then went to the national tournament and went 2-2. It was so much fun to say that I was a part of the whole thing. Now I can tell people that I know the guys that were the only team in school history to finish the regular season with a perfect season. Once again, congratulations guys on an amazing season.

I would also like to wish the rest of the athletic teams the best of luck on their seasons and hope that they can have the same success as the football team and girls soccer team had this past season.

Even though the baseball team was ranked #6 in the preseason polls for the KCAC, I believe they will surprise some people this year and earn the respect back that they once had. With a great group of guys returning and the key additions of many freshman, they are going to improve greatly from last season and I believe they can make a run for the KCAC title at the end of the season.

OU vs Lindenwood

OU Braves travled to St. Charles, Missouri for a second round playoff game the braves were ranked 5th in the nation and the Lions were ranked 3rd. Going into this game the Braves were the underdogs, both teams standing at 11-0 and the first half was a great hard with highlights for both teams. Som where in the second half the Lions seem to pull away from the Braves dang near matching the spread points. It was a great run for the OU Braves but the season is now over marking this year football team on of the best in history. Lindenwood travels to Montana next week to take on Carrol College.

Congratulations deserved by all undefeated greats

I’ve never played on an undefeated team.
As an athlete (well, as much of one that I could be) I never experienced the satisfaction of an entire season without a loss. I wish I had though.
It’s pretty obvious to me that I was never a natural born athlete, and I was OK with that. But, the mental part of the game was where I could always prove myself (my mom always said I struggled with making my limbs work in conjunction with each other and my brain – sweet isn’t she?)
This is what influenced me most to become a recreation basketball coach. Myself and two of my high school teammates started coaching elementary girls in high school.
Looking back on the first practice, coaching seemed like my worst decision. These kids didn’t even know that a basketball was orange, let alone round, and meant to go through a hoop.
But they grew. Win after win, our pride grew for our little squad. We didn’t even realize we were undefeated until our last game.
I still don’t think the girls understood what undefeated meant. They were just enjoying their picture in the newspaper and free candy.
I hope now that they’re in high school (and hopefully still involved in competitive teams) they recognize the pride in being undefeated. We all know that winning isn’t what it’s all about, but to win as well as learn and have fun? That’s greatness.
Undefeated, you join an elite group of athletes. Very few can say they’ve experienced the pride in never losing a game in a season.
But, it’s important to extend congratulations to those who have achieved ‘the perfect season.’ Congrats to the Braves football team, the Lady Braves soccer team, my little girls’ basketball club and anyone else who believed enough to reach the top.

More competitive than you might think….

Let’s talk about a unique sport, one that wasn’t the most popular when you were younger. Golf has always been called a game of good etiquette and has been branded in being a rich man’s game. Well there are two things wrong with that last sentence. One, it is not just a man’s game, today there are women’s golf teams in high school and college all over the country. Second, sure the clubs and golf clothes can get expensive, but there are great deals out there everywhere, which include online, in stores, and many different magazines.

Growing up all you ever really heard about was the main competitive sports like football, basketball, and baseball. Golf can be one very competitive sport, especially when you are competing at the college level. The Ottawa University men’s golf team went through the worst conditions at their home tournament, where they hosted six other teams. But, despite all the rain and wind on the second day of the tournament the men’s team finished second as a team with a total of 636, only three strokes behind Baker University, who took the first place trophy home.

The women’s team has been having a rough time synchronizing their better scores together in the same tournament. There have been three girls battling with great individual scores at separate tournaments for the number one spot on the team. The lady braves golf team is entering their third season for Ottawa University and is continuing to build their program into one that will be respected by many people.

The Ottawa Braves football team is currently ranked 8th in the nation standing undefeated in conference play. They take on the University of Saint Mary this Saturday to try and add to the six game winning streak . On the other hand the Lady Braves soccer team is also standing tall at the top of conference in first place beating Tabor college this past week.

The Halos and Dodgers have let me down digging a major hole for themselves both teams are down three to one in a best out of four game series. Being from Southern California I had big dreams for both teams but all that has changed. I just hope they can gain some respect in these next games.

Check out my Lakers with the addition of Ron Artest the Lakers and Kobe could easily be on their way to another NBA championship I caught highlights and this is a new Lakers team its preseason but there clicking on all cylinders.

OU Baseball

With over 30 new recruits coming in, Ottawa head baseball coach Joe Reed has put the Braves in a very good shot at contending for the KCAC Championship this year. I feel that with the returning talent that was on the Braves 2008 squad and the many new faces on the team for this season, they are going to be a very difficult team to beat when the spring season kicks off. The baseball team has been, and will continue to, work very hard in the offseason, as well as the fall season. With intersquad games almost everyday, the live game experience will be there when the season actually gets underway. Along with the intersquad games, the boys have been hosting scrimmages against area junior colleges and high school scout teams every Saturday. With four games on Saturdays, this gives every player on the roster a very good chance at seeing live pitching at the college level. This is very beneficial when it comes to the transition from high school to college. The pitching is most of the time faster and better off speed pitches as well. The hitters are also very different because there usually isn’t a weak hitter on a college roster, so the experience a freshman pitcher gets against actual college hitters is a very good thing. With the scrimmages the Braves have also been hitting the weights hard four days a week. With sessions at 6:30, 7:30 and other times, they are required to go everyday and work as hard as they can when they are in there. As you can probably tell, the Braves baseball program is headed in the right direction. With a good spring season, look for the Braves to be towards the top in the final standings when the season concludes. They have all of the ingredients to do it, so lets get it done.
